Even 425s (the railguns) can hit at next to point blank if you just pilot manual rather than automated orbit, switch the camera back and forth a few times untill your ship is flying relatively parallel to the target and you'll see transversal drop...

Shooting frigs first wtf? Guns on priority targets and drones on the frigs. If you're in a dodgy mission you can get the frigs first and not have agro with the drones but other than that it's just a waste to fire large ammo at a frigate.
